How dark devices are contributing to the downtime era

The downtime era is upon us. An environment where the most significant impact of cyber incidents is no longer the breach itself, but the operational disruption that follows. This is a time when devices are offline, software is failing, and operations come to a standstill.

For decades, cybersecurity strategy has focused on prevention. Enterprises invested heavily in detecting threats faster, blocking attacks earlier, and expanding security coverage across increasingly complex environments.

But, across industries, downtime has become one of the largest and least controlled sources of financial risk. What once appeared as localized technology failures now routinely escalate into enterprise-wide outages with material business impact.

Global IT security spending is approaching $240 billion each year, yet many organizations still can’t reliably protect or recover their devices in the face of cyber-attacks and software failures. This gap is reshaping the entire strategy behind cybersecurity, taking it from a security team problem to a business-wide problem.

Downtime is the new cyber crisis

Many cases stem from a growing number of “dark devices” sitting within enterprises. CISOs report that one in five devices within their organization can’t recover after a cyber-attack, and these devices are often the endpoints that are unencrypted, delayed patching, or out of visibility of security teams.

The dangers of dark devices

Endpoint security software fails around 20% of the time, which leaves the average device unprotected for around 76 days per year. That’s more than two months where a system is effectively left with the door unlocked, giving any attacker plenty of time to find the gap and exploit it.

The risk is only compounding. The Windows 10 end-of-lifecycle leaves an estimated 10% of enterprise endpoints stuck permanently outside of the patch cycle.

These devices will collect unfixable vulnerabilities, meaning that cybercriminals will have open access through ransomware, malware, AI-powered attacks and a new wave of emerging Agentic threats.

As attackers look for a route into a network, it’s these quiet gaps that they target. Once breached, malicious actors move laterally to compromise other devices and applications, resulting in major downtime incidents. 

The control drive leaves CISOs scrambling

One of the biggest challenges facing CISOs is the illusion of protection. On the surface, dashboards can show systems and controls as working fine, yet in the background, software is failing silently, policies are falling out of sync, and security strategies are struggling to keep up. It’s a control drift in the shadows.

The average enterprise now runs 83 security tools, but just because there are a lot of tools doesn’t mean the organization is sufficiently protected. More tools increased the number of points of failure, and, often, security teams aren’t fully aware of the control drift until a major incident occurs.

What’s worse is that with GenAI, traditional application controls are being bypassed entirely. Visits to these platforms have increased by 2.5 times over the past year, and over 99% of that activity is browser-based. It’s creating new blind spots that CISOs haven’t had to contend with previously.

Now, agentic AI is also in the mix. These aren’t just simple automation and output systems guided by humans anymore, they’re autonomous systems acting with user privileges and accessing sensitive data, often without human oversight. We’re even seeing agents delegating to other agents, which leaves security teams without visibility, or auditability, across infrastructure. The risks when agents are interacting with out-of-patch devices only compounds.

This is where Mythos shifts the challenge for CISOs. Even as a gated research preview, it shows how quickly vulnerability discovery is moving from human work to software‑scaled workflows. By surfacing the hidden math inside the enterprise, Mythos turns buried issues into immediate risks, and the old comfort of attacker friction disappears. Mythos doesn’t create fragility, it exposes it and makes it clear that prevention alone is no longer enough.

CISOs face a tough task securing their entire organization in the face of all these threats, which is why they must shift their attention to building cyber resilience and minimizing downtime. We’ve seen from major outages in recent years, one compromise can ripple across millions of devices, so whether it’s control drift or AI-driven threat types, the only answer is to be prepared to recover quickly.

Downtime is a threat to the economy 

Downtime is estimated to cost more than $400 billion annually, roughly 9% of Global 2000 profits, making it one of the largest uncontrolled financial risks to the economy.

High-impact incidents affecting core systems carry a median loss of approximately $2 million per hour, and recovery frequently takes two weeks or longer. In this environment, operational disruptions no longer remain technical incidents. They rapidly become material business risks.

The duration of recovery is just as damaging as the incident itself. Organizations without endpoint resilience face annual downtime exposure of $28 to 40 million dollars, while those with it can reduce that figure to under $5 million and recover 95% of devices within 24 hours.

Resilience isn’t just a defensive investment anymore. It has become part of the core infrastructure that keeps a business running.

In an era defined by downtime and cyberattacks, the organizations that come out ahead will be the ones whose systems can recover the fastest when failure hits.
